The correct answer is c. pressure from foreign competition.

They didn't have pressure from foreign competition, it was local problems that troubled them. Smaller farms couldn't compete with wealthy farm owners who had better machinery and could monopolize the market through better yields and better prices that they offered to those who would buy their goods.
