    It led to nationalism and imperialism

    With the developing Meiji Restoration, they started developing their military more and more and participating in worldwide politics, unlike the shogunate period when they were isolationist. This put them on the map after they started having wars with Russians and winning, which led to their spread over the SEA region and China.
