Deng sought to modernize China by introducing capitalism in a limited way, while Mao rejected all capitalist ideas. Deng closed schools and learning, while Mao believed training a skilled workforce was key to economic prosperity. Deng closed the country to outside influences, while Mao supported learning new technology from other countries. Deng believed in collectivization of farms, while Mao repealed these ideas in favor of limited private ownership of land.
