The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was incredibly important to the Civil Rights movement. This law made it illegal to force individuals to take literacy tests or use any other obstacle that would prevent a person from voting (i. e. grandfather clause). This law was a necessity for African-American voters, especially in the Southern states. This law resulted in a huge increase in the amount of African-American voters registered, with some states having an increase of over 50%.
