Colonies were founded with specific trade agreements in places.
Its called specialization. Its because it was easier and cheaper for each colony to produce what suited them better. So one place that didn't have a lot of lumber could trade something with the lumber colony. It makes things way more efficient. Instead of wasting energy on producing a lot of things, you specialize, get good at something and trade for everything else.
