Why did written languages use symbols for sounds instead of ideas and objects?

    While some of the written langauges used symbols for ideas (Chinese and Egyptians), most of the languages use symbols for sounds, as it's easier to learn, enables writing down of novel words without having learnt the symbol for them first, and thus leads to a greater literacy level.
