Why was Babylon an important city in the ancient world

Babylon was a major city of ancient Mesopotamia in the fertile plain between the tigris and the Euphrates the city was built upon the Euphrates and divided into equal parts along its right and left banks with steep embankments to contain the rivers seasonal flooding

I would say it is because they held Jerusalem in captivity
