How did the border dispute between Mexico and Texas affect the Mexican-American War?

It cause the Texans to start the war with mexico by ambushing them first and mexico retaliating. When word came back to the president they left out the part of the US attacking first therefore making the US attack mexico and pushing them over the Rio grande into Mexican territory
