The Freedom Riders took a non-violent approach to aid in the desegregation in the south. When they decided to take action by riding interstate buses with mixed races, they let the white mobs attack them instead of defending themselves. They also led sit-in in local restaurants where there were segregated seating and counters. A main tactic of the freedom riders was to have groups of interracial individuals cooperating to break the rules of the segregation laws.
