How did the invention of the steam engine changed transportation and shipping and how it led to the future economic development of the west?

    Simply explained: it allowed people to travel up stream, which was almost impossible before the invention. By traveling both ways in a river, it increased trading, which increased spending which stimulates the economy all over the U. S.
