How is the electoral college related to the president

    Electoral College de-facto elects the president. When citizens of the US vote for the president, they actually vote for the electors, who will later vote for the president.

    In the majority of cases the electors vote according to the popular vote, but they are not always obliged to do so. Some states however have laws that punish them if they don't.
