    New England has mostly rocky, infertile soil. of the following describes a reason that colonial New England tended to have only small family farms. New England colonies raise dairy cows, hogs, chickens, and horses along with crops like corn and soybeans.

    Middle colonies grow mostly wheat, and barley because of the flat land. They are called the breadbasket.

    Southern colonies grow cotton, peanuts, and oranges mostly.
