    Most of the German immigrants were Protestants, and among them Lutherans were the majority. About one-third of German immigrants were Catholics. A substantial segment-about 250,000-of the German immigrants were Jews. Jews had lived in Germany since the fourth century, many having settled in the Rhine area.
