President Johnson was a staunch supporter of the Vietnam War but as the time for the elections in 1968 came the public was already questioning the US involvement in the Vietnam War and was hugely opposed to it. President Johnson realized his views made him unpopular and he knew he couldn't gather enough support and thus did not run for president again.
