When the Muslims (Turks) captured Constantinople, they controlled the center of trade. The Muslims took complete control of the Middle East. This shut off the trade routes from Europe to Asia. All goods had to go through Constantinople. They were in control of all trade going in and out Constantinople. Therefore, they placed a tariff on each article that passed through Constantinople. Basically the muslims refused to trade.
