The sad answer to that question is that all but 38 of the original 105 settlers at Jamestown died. They didn't survive the first winter there. Starting a colony in a whole new world was a very dangerous and difficult undertaking, and disease and starvation affected many of the settlers. The settlement continued, but it continued to be difficult. Two years later, only 60 of 500 settlers at that time managed to survive another miserable cold season. The first decade in Jamestown was horribly difficult overall.
