Why did the southerners oppose protective tariffs? The reason is that southerners had built a few factories and didn't benefit from the tariff. Tariff drove up the price for many British goods that the southerners bought. Therefore the southerners complained that the tariff made northern manufacturers rich at the expense of the South.
