A goal of modern-day religious fundamentalism is to 2. maintain traditional religious values in society. By definition, fundamentalism means a focus on the fundamental of a religion. In the US, this is most commonly Christian fundamentalism, wherein followers look to the Bible for advice and guidance. Rather than focusing on developments in theology over the past two thousand years, fundamentalists believe a strict reading of the Bible is necessary. Additionally, today that fundamentalism has merged with politics resulting in the constant attempt to develop a combination of church and state.
