King Alfred the great (849 - 899 AD) is important because he was a just and fair ruler and because also of his achievements and contribution to the English Kingdom. He was the most famous of the Anglo - Saxon kings.

Despite overwhelming odds, he successfully defended his Kingdom, Wessex, against the Vikings. He also introduced wide ranging reforms including defense measures, reform of law and of currency, namely coinage.

He was also a keen man on education and encouraged his people to learn to read and write.
