What was the main purpose behind segregation laws? to protect African Americans from white supremacist groups to prevent contact that would suggest equality of the races to provide facilities that were customized to each racial group to enable African Americans to develop their own institutions

    I believe the correct answer would be that to prevent contact that would suggest equality of the races. These laws refers to the policies that keep white ad black American separated. For instance, in schools, public transportation and public places.
