What changes took place in the early 1800s that broadened democracy in the United States

    1. Political parties began to hold nominating conventions. This was a change from simply having party officials choose the candidates.

    2. Many states began to reduce or eliminate property requirements for voting. Some states retained tax-paying qualifications in order to qualify to vote, but by the 20th century those would be gone in all states except Pennsylvania and New Jersey (who were the last states to drop such requirements).
