Describe the obstacles that women in the 1600s and 1700s faced in being accepted

Women in the 17th and 18th centuries struggled to be accepted into society as they were not viewed as citizens in the western world. Women were unable to participate in conversation with men, to include political affairs. They could host a discussion but could not participate. Many women in France did this, called salons, and gathered information and education through hosting. Women were at the ownership of a father and then husband and was unable to own property or divorce or custody of her children. Women were expected to work in the home and to seen, not heard. Education for women as minimal but enough to read and write for all women. Upper class women could expect to be better educated so they could be a proper wife. Women rarely left their homes especially those living on farms. Church would be the most accepted time for a woman to be active in the community.
