Read the following provisions of the Bill of Rights and identify the political idea that is central to all the provisions.

That the pretended power of suspending the laws or the execution of laws by regal authority [the monarch] without consent of Parliament is illegal;

That the pretended power of dispensing with laws or the execution of laws by regal authority, as it hath been assumed and exercised of late, is illegal;

That levying money for or to the use of the Crown by pretence of prerogative, without grant of Parliament, for longer time, or in other manner than the same is or shall be granted, is illegal;

That it is the right of the subjects to petition the king, and all commitments and prosecutions for such petitioning are illegal;

    The central idea of the Bill of Rights is that the individual has certain rights that cannot be taken away or trampled by the government. Originating as the British Bill of Rights into what we now know as the first ten amendments of the United States Constitution, there is a central theme. That theme is that the individual should always have rights that are preserved and not to be taken away.
