Although political parties in the early 1790s had yet to gain much traction in the United States, the participants in the Whiskey Rebellion would later sympathize with Thomas Jefferson's Democratic-Republican party, which was against the more north-centered Federalist Party. The main distinction between the parties, and most relevant to the issues surrounding the Whiskey Rebellion, was the role of national government, and how much power it should have relative to the power of individual states.

Federalists believed in greater centralization of power in the Federal Government, while the Democratic-Republican party believed that most power and rights should lie with the States.
