    In 1830 the United States was a prosperous and rapidly growing nation with an unquenchable desire for new lands to settle. In that year President Andrew Jackson signed into law the Indian Removal Act, which provided for the general resettlement of eastern Native Americans to lands west of the Mississippi River.
