Why might the peace symbol around the soldier's neck be considered contradictory?

In a sense, a soldier sporting a peace symbol may be quite contradictory because the job of a soldier is not to make peace but to serve in a war. Although the end goal of war is peace, the means is the exact opposite, which is why a soldier, a representation of war, wearing a peace sign may be ironic.
