Explanation

The house of Burgesses was the first legislative assembly in colonies of America and it was the first to be democratically elected legislative body in the American colonies. Members of this house were elected from each county of Virginia where every county had two representatives. All the laws passed by the body could be vetoed by the governors and it initially consisted 22 representatives. Later its powers were limited when Virginia became a royal colony.
