When the USS Maddox was fired upon, it was situated in the Gulf of Tonkin. The USS Maddox incident was also known as the Gulf of Tonkin incident.
USS Maddox was an Alien M. Sumner-class destroyer given the name of Captain William A. T. Maddox.
