Before Brown v. Board of Education, the main precedent in regards to segregation was the Plessy v. Ferguson case which established that segregation was legal and legitimate. The Brown v. Board of Education struck this down and explained that the previous precedent was indeed unconstitutional and racist. The social impact now was that schools had to be desegregated and that African-American students had to be integrated fully into the society as all future court cases looked to this case for a resolution.

The main social impact of the decision in Brown v. Board of Education was that it struck down Plessy vs. Ferguson--meaning that segregation in public places in the United States between the races was no longer legal or condoned.
