During World War I, conscientious objectors were used to support "relief efforts in France." The conscientious objectors were granted layoffs either for farm service or relief work in France under the American Friends Service Committee. A limited number did alternative service as fire fighters in the Cascade Range in the vicinity of Camp Lewis, Washington and in a Virginia psychiatric hospital. Although this was not universally the case, and many stayed at home.
