The Supreme Court case ruled that slaves are considered "property" and not people.

In the case Dred Scott vs. Sandford, Dred Scott sued for his freedom because he was brought to a free territory by his slave master. Since slavery was outlawed in the Wisconsin territory, Scott felt that this made him a free man. However, the Supreme Court justices ruled that slaves are property and have no legal rights in court.
