Why was Petersburg so important to the Confederate capital, Richmond?

It was the most vital transportation hub for the capital.

Most of Lee's army was located there when Grant's army arrived.

Its loss would cut Richmond off from the rest of the nation.

It was the only location for reinforcements to arrive.

    Petersburg was the only way the South could get reinforcements into Richmond since the rest of the City was surrounded by Union troops.
