The attack on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina, in April 1861 was the bloodiest conflict in American history up to that time. It marked the beginning of the War Between the States over the bitterly divisive issue of slavery. The Fall of Fort Sumter describes this dramatic first battle in the Union/Confederate struggle for power.
