    The answer is A. The two provinces made up the majority of the population of France prior to the end of the Franco-Prussian War. These two places previously were a part of France but became part of Germany after the Franco-Prussian War. Despite the fact that victory went to the Germans, both sides found themselves in a deadlock which led to trench warfare as both armies dug in.
