The Franks were first united as a single kingdom during the reign of Clovis who died in 511 AD. At that time the Frankish kingdom ranged from southern Netherlands, through modern day Belgium and into the northern region of France. So the answer is #3. The early Frankish territory was not mountainous or was it as large as the Byzantine empire.
