The character of Lucy is one of the most beloved in American Television History.

In many ways she was very nontraditional e. g. she was the first Female Lead of a mainstream American Sitcom and the show single-handled revolved around her.

She was challenging social norms, standing up for women's rights as well as the civil rights movements of the time.

However, in many ways she was also shown as a traditional woman of the 1950s. She did not have a job, she was a home maker, took care of children, cooked food and was seen as a 'motherly' figure by most television viewers.
