How did Hannibal surprise Rome during the Second Punic War? How did the Romans counter that attack and gain victory?

    Hannibal knew that the Romans saw Carthage as a naval power. So he decided to surprise them by invading on land. He had to cross the Alps to do that, and he lost a lot of men, horses, and elephant (which Hannibal considered to be like "tanks"), but he was successful at his mission.

    The Romans weren't used to losing, however, so they responded by taking the war to Hannibal's home. Once Hannibal learned about the war, he had to abandon his army in Rome. That led to the end of the war and the Romans were once again victorious.
