After meeting with Philip Randolph, President Truman decided to desegregate the American military. Before meeting with Randolph in 1948, the United States military was largely segregated according to race. Randolph threatened to advise African-American men to not register for the draft if the practice of military segregation continued, hence Truman was forced to desegregate the American military.
