    Ford's pardon of the disgraced former president Richard M. Nixon was a political blow from which his presidency never recovered. Ford narrowly lost the 1976 Presidential Election to Jimmy Carter, and polls revealed that many of those who cast their votes against him cited the pardon as their primary reason for doing so.
