Why were the pioneers often the target of lightning during storms?

Numerous reasons. For starters, they were often the tallest thing on the prairie since they went through numerous areas that were flatter than a pancake. Another was that since they moved in large groups, there was a lot of people who had things that could attract lightning so it was easy for a lightning bolt to strike them.
