The US dropped the bombs because of they only had two option in taking, they island hopped from the Philippines to the bottom of japan which they did then they had to choose to attack from the sea or an aerial, you must know this too to understand why they did an aerial strike of mass proportion, the Japanese government told all the people of japan if they see a U. S soldier group or military trike coming from the see they were to get anything that could be use as a weapon and kill as many Americans as possible and they had to fight to the death. There were hundreds of thousands of Japanese people ready to fight to the death and only tens of thousands U. S troops. This battle would be lost to every day farmers and towns people of japan and the U. S troops would have all died so the U. S government decided to drop the fat man and the little boy and it worked the Japanese surrendered on September 2, 1945. So to answer your question Yes the U. S had to drop the Atomic bombs to win the war.
