Jackson used slave labor to create a set of fortifications along the Rodriguez Canal, a narrow body of water near a plantation adjacent to New Orleans. He first widened the existing canal, and then built a buttressed dirt rampart seven feet in height and reinforced with timber. This line extended for almost a mile, connecting the Mississippi with a nearby swamp and thus creating a nearly impassible line.
