Why does the president of the united states serve as commander in chief of the military?

    The president serves as Commander in Chief because the USA wanted a civilian to lead the military for fear that if a member of the Armed Forces led the military, then that person might try and take over the government. Since a civilian controls the military, the chances of a military take over of the civilian government is highly unlikely.
