How did the Sumerians irrigate the land

The Sumerians moved to the land between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers about 3500BCE. We do not know where they came from; they were probably nomads who discovered the fertile land of Mesopotamia. Nomads travel in small groups until they have eaten the food and hunted the animals in their area.

The farmers in Sumer created levees to hold back the floods from their fields and cut canals to channel river water to the fields. The use of levees and canals is called irrigation, another Sumerian invention ... The Sumerians had a common language and believed in the same gods and goddesses.
