The water particles dont move horizontally, instead the move in a circular motion. Nothing bad happens to them

So, as the wave passes through the water, the water molecules do not move horizontally, but instead sweep out a circular pattern with a diameter equal to the wave height. The water particles return to approximately the same position from which they started.
