The correct answer is D) The US public was serious about creating a healthy and sustainable environment.

The Environmental Protection Agency was created by President Richard Nixon in Decemeber of 1970. This agency of the federal government would work to protect the environment from pollution and other harmful substances. This call for an agency to protect the environment was spurred by several different factors, with one of the biggest being the book Silent Spring published by Rachel Carson during the 1960's.
