Why might liberals and radicals join together in a nationalist cause?

To overthrow the government ... It sounds stupid since the government is what makes us go to our job everyday and keeps us from blowing our neighbors head off ... BUT, in case the government wants to take more rights away from citizens then liberals and radicals may have to fight together to overcome this futuristic possibility ...
