A freeholder is someone who owns the freehold on a building or piece of land. Being a freeholder gives opportunities for settlers to integrate into communities and form greater social spheres. Crevecoeur describes freeholders as as proper farmers that migrated westward to introduce true social bonds, they were industrious people, and were " the most respectable set of people in this part of the world."
