The period of feudalism began, because the emperor needed soldiers to fight his wars for him. Once the soldiers returned home, he decided to bestow upon them gifts of small parcels of land and titles called Daimyos. The emperors reason for doing this was to try and keep these strong warriors from overtaking his throne. The soldiers who received these lands became quite wealthy and hired serfs to farm their land for them, as well as become a small army for them. The samurai became popular during this time and was a must have for any army going into battle. People began to respect Daimyo and samurais more than the emperor. During feudalistic times, Japan began to distinguish itself from China and didn't follow their ways as closely.
