Mahatma Gandhi predicted that "rivers of blood would flow" because of the creation of Pakistan. On August 15, 1947 the British gave up their control over India. The Indian subcontinent was partitioned into two countries: Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. Mass migration began immediately. Muslims in India hurried to cross over to Pakistan and Hindus in Pakistan started to make their way to India. Violence erupted, villages were set on fire and men, children and the aged were hacked to death while women were raped. More than 15 million people were displaced and more than one million people died.
